Google Sites logo A new application, Google Sites, was just launched from Google, making online file sharing a breeze!

In desperation to find an application for a new client, Hank’s Photos, I stumbled upon this new product. (Hank’s Photos doesn’t have access to a database) Although it’s not a solve-all free website hosting application, it could be just what you need for your company’s collaboration and productivity services. I found it a lot more user-friendly than ZOHO which was my choice prior to finding Google Sites.

From the article at webware.com:

[Google Sites] has two main features: First, you can set it up so anyone you want can edit a Google Sites page (or you can keep it private). And second, it records all changes and lets you change things so you can un-do these edits.

Users who want to keep track of changes to a Google Sites project, or just a page on it, can easily sign up to get alerted when other users make changes.

So, I did a little messing with it to see what could be done, and just how easy it would be for the non-techy to use. You can view my resulting design works here.

All-in-all, I give this new application from Google Apps a thumbs-up!

On my Google personalized home page, one of my feeds is from Your Guide to Web Design / HTML - from about.com by Jennifer Kyrnin. I pay a visit to her articles at least every other day - Jennifer definitely has some of the best articles for web design enthusiasts.
This link, from about.com, discusses nVu, a free HTML editor, that is said to perform similar to Dreamweaver, the $400 web authoring program, from Adobe. I haven’t tried this editor nor will I as I already own Dreamweaver (as Studio 8) - I purchased the student version of AdobeĀ® Creative Suite 2 Premium. Thought I’d pass this along to my readers (both of you).

From Wikipedia:

Intended to be an open source equivalent to proprietary software like Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver and is one of the primary WYSIWYG editors for Linux. Nvu is designed to be easy for non-technical computer users. Knowledge of HTML or CSS is not required.

This wide-spread ‘easy to use’ cPanel installation script offers only outdated and insecure versions of popular open-source web applications and burdens the community of volunteers that make them: “… We can only warn you about what you could be getting into. Fantastico makes it harder, not easier, to run a secure and up-to-date Drupal site.”

For the full Fantastico story, GO HERE: Beware of Fantastico De Luxe

Fantastico scripts are usually executed when a new website is created, or a new application is added to an existing website. The scripts typically create tables in a database, install software, adjust permissions, and modify web server configuration files. Although Fantastico is typically associated with open-source software, a handful of scripts are also available which install commercial products, which once installed, are available to all of the domains hosted by a physical server; such as web site builder SohoLaunch, PerlDesk customer support software, and AccountLab Plus software for interacting with Internet registrars.

kwiKKpages Website BuilderSo don’t I need a web designer any more?

You can still HIRE ME to adjust your content for usability.

What is a kwiKKpage? In short: kwiKKpage is a fairly new approach to website building and webpage maintenance. They sould call it a resolution revolution!

kwiKKpage is an online website builder.
… with cheap web hosting!

With kwiKKpage you do not need a webdesign application or a content management system to create and update your webpage. What you do is: you write directly on the page. This on-line editor is BY FAR the simpliest, most user friendly method for creating web presence. All you need to do is put the text exactly where it should appear on the page - you format it like you would in a word processor.

But you can also put pictures and all kinds of images exactly where you want them, just drawing a rectangle on the page where the image should appear. The image will be uploaded, resized ad placed on the page all in one go. You can drag and arrange all elements thus created like the paragraph and picture on the right. So maintaining a kwiKKpage is really child’s play. Actually, it was first designed with children in mind. I highly recommend it for educational and school use.

So is kwiKKpage a content management system?
A blog? A wiki? A WYSIWYG editor?

Why don’t you just check out the kwiKKpage website?
