Love it when I get to do artsy websites!!

Look at it this way, if you were a website designer, what would you rather do:

1. A boring website for a dentist, a lawyer, or a historian
2. A creative website for a band, an artist, or a designer

Time’s up!
If you choose #1, you must send me 100 Brownie Points. If you choose #2, GOOD DECISION … 5 stars in your crown!

Darius Cordell Inc: New Website

Anyway, so I got a call from Darius Cordell, a highly acclaimed dress designer out of Texas: DariusCordell.com. Seems his search engine position has suffered, and his design is prehistoric – he was still using …………… FRAMES!!!! And he felt that the frames was a part of what has suffered his search rankings. No doubt that it can be, but not necessarily. And here’s a before picture:

Darius Cordell Inc: Current Website

OK, so I get this COOL job. But not every cool job comes easy.
My mistake – I need to spell out EVERYTHING that’s involved. But of course, I have my Terms of Service for that. Or so I thought LOL. In recent design jobs, I’ve caught a few things that accounted for more charges, but there’s a multitude of factors that go into web design, and each client brings on another set (you feel me?).

One of Darius’s intentions was to have no-scrolling web pages.  The scroll bar COULD NOT be present. So I do a couple of mock-ups, and they get rejected. Either the scroll bar was present in his screen resolution (likely 1280 x 1024), or there was too much empty space. So I do some renditions. They get rejected. So I ask him what screen resolution he wants to size the content for.

“Ha ha ha, like Dude, how am I supposed to know? You’re the designer!” Not his actual words – you get the drift.

But I’ve done the impossible before, so what the heck – might as well do another one (see: Working With Idiot Clients). **I claim no reference as such for Darius, he’s a nice guy, and he’s particular** And it only took another three renditions to get this message: “It looks really nice…”

What this client snagged me on was multiple designs for one website. And of course, the no-scrolling extra work (who would have known?). So far I’ve designed three layouts (currently on #3) for this website and re-designed his contact layout/configuration. But we’re not done yet.

Yup, I did some updates to my Terms of Service web page. Yet I know as sure as “This ain’t my first rodeo” this ain’t my last “snagged me again” design job.

  1. Darius Cordell is a company that designs evening gowns, bridal dresses, and pageant wear, among many other things.inwebsite creation Its really difficult to show multiple design in one page without scrolling..how you done this.??really its so appreciable.

  2. That’s one of the reasons why I got out of the design field was the inability to be able to read customers minds. I actually enjoyed more doing sites for businesses due to the fact that they usually had a better idea of what they wanted to show the world. Granted they were boring and cookie cutterish, but you had to take the bad with the good I suppose.

  3. @Website Hosting: There’s a lot of tricks you can do with CSS positioning. At dynamicdrive.com you can learn all about these layouts.

  4. Working with clients who know what they want but are just unable to communicate what they want is frustrating, but the marketer who has this skill will always have a leg up on competitors.

  5. DariusCordell.com has gained more confidence and success and its a great thing.

  6. CSS position is right but how you changed the images position on mouse click. You have used java script because I don’t think that we can change the position of items at the time when page loaded without refreshing it. You done a great job I really like it.

  7. @Self Managed Super Funds: Yes, there’s a JavaScript file that performs this.

  8. I’m just come across, your blog is charming! I’m joy, hope we can be good friends!

  9. Design is simple but I like this logo and presentation and article is creative.

  10. A big step up from what they were originally displaying. Their old site looks so bland next to your creation.

  11. It is difficult to be a creative provider, or a client. There is always so much ‘unspoken’ knowledge and desires standing in the way. Terms of service and exhaustive briefings really are the best way.

  12. Due to my lack of creative design abilities, I prefer to do boring websites for dentists and lawyers that are characterized by a clear and intuitive navigation structure.

  13. I think the new shades and color scheme is pretty modern.

  14. Looking good! Should have a looksee at what you could do for my site.
