Could be good, could be bad … depends on what you do with it.
But I know for certain, that if you restrict Google to display ONLY the meta description that you provide, this could be detrimental. This video also describes in brief the new personalized search from Google, and what it does for search engine results pages.
This was received from my email subscription to Site Reference.

This is incredible – good for your SERP and at the same time, bad for your SERP.
Woah – I commented on my own post (wasn’t logged in). But I need to address something here. I couldn’t believe how this post took off: within 20 minutes of posting this, I already had 8 hits to this post — likely due to to my title and Google Caffeine. This proves very well the importance of posting your blog topics with a keyword rich title. TOO COOL!!

oh! that is a great update you have provided. I will certainly be checking my meta description and i hope this will make my rankings better on google. Thanks for the amazing update. Regards Andy
You know I’ve noticed the personalized search results by mistake when I decided to check how well my site was doing in the serps for my main keyword phrase. You can imagine my excitement when I saw it #1 in Google. It was only till I got to work and decided to do another search on it and show off my success when it was nowhere near the top page. Your video just made me realize that this is going to make things harder for us internet marketers to make money. I wonder if Bing has a similar feature. If it doesn’t then I hope it beats Google in the search engine war!
Thanks for sharing useful information and great video. Its mean that we have to be careful while writing description .
