The more quality and relevant links you have pointing to your website the higher your website will get ranked on google. Because it makes google think your website is important as there are so many links pointing to your website. Also the anchor text/title of the link should contain your main keyword so if you have 100 links with your main keyword pointing to your website it should go up for that keyword.
But there are so many factors like the other guy said. SEO is so interesting apart from link building which can be a pain….
